With time running out, Persephone leads the gifted young seer Suri, the Fhrey sorceress Arion, and a small band of misfits in a desperate search for aid-a quest that will take them into the darkest depths of Elan. The answer lies across the sea in a faraway land populated by a reclusive and dour race who feel nothing but disdain for both Fhrey and mankind. And even if the clans can join forces, how will they defeat an enemy whose magical prowess renders them indistinguishable from gods? Raithe, the God Killer, may have started the rebellion by killing a Fhrey, but long-standing enmities dividing the Rhunes make it all but impossible to unite against the common foe. Now the thrilling saga continues as the human uprising is threatened by powerful enemies from without-and bitter rivalries from within. The remarkable title poem, like so many of these poems, interrogates intimacy and violence in a voice both ‘knowing and not knowing,' both mystified and revelatory. In Life On Mars she infuses her masterful gifts with wondrous intensity and tenderness. Smith's previous award-winning books established her as a meditative poet unlike any other of her generation. Smith's new collection radiates with so many different emotions-and yet, all poems ring with loss. "Whatever else you encounter in this world of words-passages of sci-fi here, a bit of formal play over there-you can count on finding elegy. Yes, she takes us cavorting in the cosmos to ponder questions of magic and mortality-but, back on earth, her wrenching sequence on the death of her father is a tour de force of unleashed pain and reflection. The pace and international flavour shouldn't be a surprise: from the start, this reads like the book of the film and that film will be a blockbuster. I finished it late last night and it's been a fantastic week's read: a big, solid, chunky, fast-paced, rip-roaring thriller, the love child of a manic union between Jack Reacher and James Bond. I read it late on Saturday night, bought the book on Sunday and started reading it on Monday. ![]() Until it isn't that: the goody bag at Harrogate Crime Fest last weekend contained a small 'taster' booklet that offered the first chapter of I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes. Having doubted William Goldman's ability since Marathon Man and the partial butchering of Misery, but since he's writing here with director Lawrence Kasdan, he can't foul up that badly. The book was 1000 pages of hit-or-miss horror, and the movie condenses it into two and a quarter hours that takes most of the best parts from the book. Of course, there's exceptions (such as The Shining and Carrie-both of which were poorly remade), but one that makes the book look like string cheese is Dreamcatcher. When John Grisham or Stephen King writes a book, everyone can expect it to be turned into some sort of movie that's not as good (the only one that hasn't had that happen to it is the latter's Insomnia-and it really deserves to be made into something great) as the book was. ![]() ![]() ![]() It doesn’t feel like taking action-it feels like doing nothing. ![]() Instead, the best thing each of us can do, unless we’re one of the relatively few people on the front lines of the pandemic response, is to implement the recommended social-distancing protocols and wait. It wasn't long before space opera redeemed itself and became a favorite sub-genre of sf fans. The "space opera" label was originally used as a pejorative when it was coined by Wilson Tucker in 1941 to refer to the "outworn spaceship yarn". The stories are usually grand in scope (as measured in distance, time and/or number of characters) and offer endless corners in which authors can write their stories. Space opera settings include locations usually associated with outer space, like spaceships and other planets. Space opera stories are ones in which the narrative emphasis is on melodramatic adventure. ![]() ![]() As a reader of science fiction, I can think of few sub-genres that server that purpose better than space opera.
